Highlanders Open Up Spring Season at Lincoln Park

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The NJIT men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened up its spring season at Lincoln Park this past weekend competing against Saint Peter's and Saint Francis (NY).

The men defeated Saint Francis (NY) 76-47 while falling to Saint Peter's 78-59. On the women's side, the Highlanders topped Saint Francis (NY) 69-44 as the Peahens of Saint Peter's took an 83-49 victory.

Freshman Amanda Hefferan led the way for the Highlanders recording two first place finishes in the 1500 meter run and the 5000 meter run. Classmate Dasiy Gallegos placed second in the 5000 meter behind Hefferan with a time of 24:51.25 and finished sixth in the 1500 meter run.

Senior Eti Ebewo finished first in the shot put with a throw of 34'09 and finished second behind teammate Denaya Hemingway in the discus and javelin. Hemingway and Ebewo finished one -- two in the discus while taking a third and fifth place finish in the javelin.

Freshman Nicole Kerrison was the only Highlander to place in the 100 meter huddles with a time of 20.08. In the women's long jump, Kerrison placed fifth with a jump of 13'0.

Leading the men was sophomore Umar Saeed taking a first place finish in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:17.25 and in the 5,000 meter run at 16:12.99.

Rookie Mark Givens added a first place finish in the 400 meter dash with a time of 52.85 while Chadwick Munroe picked up a third place finish in the 800 meter run.

The Highlanders will return to action on Friday at the Monmouth Invitational.
